My local gardening center is a wonderful place to go, and many of the people who work there year round know me by name. However, there are just some times when I can't find what I am looking for there. At those times, I have several online stores I will immediately go to, one of the first being Gardener's Supply.
I first learned about this story from their catalog, which can be requested on the website - www.gardeners.com - for free. However, the online store is a great place to browse, plus get new ideas and advice for your garden.
For me, this site is fun just to look at and dream about what I can do. After taking a tour in Disney's The Land pavilion at Epcot, I came home with a whole bunch of new ideas that included hydroponics and vertical gardening. Gardener's Supply has products that support these ideas, although I haven't had much success with this just yet. Probably has more to do with a 2 year old and three cats in the house, though.
One new product I am trying this year is something called a tomato teepee that is supposed to extend the season. We've had a particularly cool spring here in the northeast and I've been worried about having my plants out so early. However, the temperature could end up being higher than ninety soon, so I don't want to wait too long to get them started. The tomato teepees use water to keep plants cool during the day and warm during the night, protecting them from these sudden changes in the weather. It's a product I haven't seen anywhere else!
There are many different options available for growing plants indoors and out, starting seeds, and keeping your garden pest-free at Gardener's Supply. The descriptions of their products are very detailed, which I feel they have to be since many products are unusual enough that I haven't seen them before.
Categories for shopping include: Birding, etc, Composting, Decorative, Flower Gardening, Furniture, Greenhouses & Sheds, Home Solutions, Landscaping, Pest Control, Plants, Pots & Planters, Seedstarting, Solar Solutions, Tools, Vegetable Gardening, and Watering. There is also an Outlet area to shop at and often there are Clearance Sales going on.
As I slip through each category, underneath the products are a few articles offering tips geared to that particular subject. It's interesting to read through these and get new ideas to try, especially when I've had a less that stellar gardening season the year before. Also at the bottom of every page is a Zone Finder for the hardiness of various plants. I simply type in my zip code, and I'm immediately told what my hardiness zone is. Most plants or seeds have this indicated on their packaging or are listed in the information on a website. There is also a section at the bottom of the page with News, Tips, & Info that can help out with many gardening questions and sometimes inspire me to try something new and different! This is how I got into composting.
Gardener's Supply does sell a few plants, but that is not their main product; it is all those accessories that come along with the plants.
I have found the shipping charges not to terribly expensive, however I do try to group as much in one order as possible. Standard shipping is generally by UPS, although they state that sometimes they do ship regular mail. I have not received anything through regular mail from them yet. Charges are:

Next day shipping is available, should you want it.
Gardener's Supply offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Should you not be satisfied with any of their products, you can return it for an exchange or replacement. There is also a customer service number where you can call with any problems you're having and they will try to help you figure out what's going on. Should your plants have problems with bugs eating them, or some disease, they have a staff of gardeners available to find the best solution for you.
In suburban New York, I can tell you that the size of my backyard is probably the size of many rural gardens. The size of my vegetable garden would probably be considered pathetic to many people, but I really work at it. There are so many options for starting seeds early, or growing vegetables indoors in cool weather at Gardener's Supply (if only I didn't have to worry about my cats digging in the plants). I hope one day to really try growing plants year-round indoors, and I know I can find a lot of help doing so at Gardener's Supply.
