Campo (South American Grill)

Mar 04 '01 (Updated Mar 06 '01)

The Bottom Line Good Argentinian food at reasonable prices. Carnivores unite! I recommend ordering meat, the garlic/parsley fries, and the desserts I mentioned. Four stars across the board.

Campo is at 502 Amsterdam Avenue, Between 84th and 85th Streets. Phone # 212 874-4559.

I don't know why they don't just say the restaurant is Argentinian because that is what the menu is.

I had brunch at Campo last Sunday. I ordered steak and eggs ($10.95). The steak was very flavorful and cooked properly (to order)although it was a bit fatty. I definitely enjoyed it. The home fries were good as well. they give you muffin-like rolls and herb butter with brunch. There was also a bit of mesclun with balsamic vinegar on the plate.

Last night we ate dinner at Campo. The matambre (veal roll)with Russian Salad (potato salad with vegetables) appetizer ($7) was good. The papas a la provenzal ($3.50) are garlic and parsley flavored french fries, and are excellent. They are limp, but I guess that is the price you pay for having them garlic infused. The entrana (skirt steak) ($12.50)was cooked properly and very flavorful.

I don't like their chimnichuri sauce that much. It is sauce that you use for meat that contains garlic and parsely. I have had (and made) better.

The sangria was made with good wine which is what I like about Sangria in Argentinian restaurants. Unfortunately, the fruit was chopped so small as to be unidentifiable. Upon closer examination, they used apples, pears (that were mealy so shouldn't have been used), and tiny bit of orange. The sangria wasn't bad, but I have had better sangria in Argentinian restaurants.

Desserts: Their flan ($4.50) (with caramel on top) was creamy and extremely good. I've eaten enough flan in my time to know how good it is. The crepes with sliced apples and port wine ($6) was amazing. That port wine sauce was so flavorful that I would have known it was made with port even if I wasn't told.

They give you the herbed butter with a nice thick crusted bread with dinner.

They do have a variety of meats on the menu including an assorted meat grill for 2 ($25.) They also have a few pasta choices on the menu at $8.95 each.

Next time I'll try their empanadas (2 for $5).

The restaurant is very small, but they do take reservations.

The waiter was very nice to us and caught on quickly that he didn't have to explain the cuisine to me, since I am extremely familiar with it.

Four stars across the board for food, decor (cute little place), service (the waiter was attentive, nice, and gave me a cookie), and overall.
