Pros:Casino, fairly clean.
Cons:Slow/indifferent service, not best locale.
The Bottom Line: If you are only staying for a night you will likely have a decent sleep but will feel you did not get your money's worth.
Exterior:
The Colon hotel is a towering structure sitting on a main street in Quito with many banks and businesses nearby.
Lobby and Check-in:
Check-in was quite slow at this hotel and the staff in general seemed to be in no hurry to complete things for us.
Rooms:
The rooms at the hotel were typical for an average 3 star hotel, fairly clean, with TV, bed, dresser, and small bathroom. I have to say I wasnt overly impressed, the bed was firm, and pillows seemed cheap, and there was a fair bit of street noise (including intermittent gun-fire from the street below a couple times).
Amenities & Restaurants:
The hotel restaurant served tasty and relatively inexpensive meals, and I ate most of my meals here. Unfortunately about 2 days after returning I came down with some sever bug and I tend to attribute it to my meals at the hotel.
The hotel also has a large casino in the basement and drinks tend to flow free while you gamble. I didnt partake but some friends did and the odds seem fairly standard.
There is also a rooftop pool, which is excellent for working on a burn, which happens quickly close to the equator (experience talking). The pool area is nothing spectacular and in fact I felt somewhat bare and deserted in the sea of concrete.
Check-out:
Check-out was a painfully slow, perhaps the slowest I have ever experienced. Granted we were a group of 12, but it was akin to pounding out the bill on stone tablets, time-wise.
Location:
The area is primarily a business area and restaurants/bars are a 5 minute walk. Crime is a problem in Quito so be careful of straying off the main roads. There are also tons of street vendors throughout the day and you can get great deals on wool sweaters and such.
Service:
Service was fairly poor/indifferent overall.
