The Bottom Line: A thoroughly amateurish newspaper filled with mostly wire-service stories and mistakes galore.
When Ted Fang took over the Examiner from Hearst Corp. (when Hearst bought the rival Chronicle), people didn't expect much. They weren't disappointed.
Fang has gone through several top editors in rapid succession. There were production problems, which prevented most readers from being able to find a copy. But those early glitches could be forgiven -- after all, starting a new newspaper from scratch is tough.
What can't be overlooked, however, is the absolute amateur nature of the paper. Early on, they misspelled Wednesday as Wenesday on the banner for Page 1.
During the election goings-on, the paper trumpeted that the NCAA -- instead of the NAACP -- was going to sue on behalf of black voters in Florida. Oh man!
Hearst GAVE Fang $66 million to take the Examiner off its hands. What did he use the money for? Obviously not reporters and editors.
