The Bottom Line For great music all in one spot... make your own mix.
Aren't mixed tapes great? I've been making them since I was about 8 or 9 back when I had my cheap one deck tape recorder with the microphone held up to the radio or stereo to catch that favorite song.... and yes that meant that no one in the room was allowed to talk during the entire song or risk having their voice forever on the tape. We've come a long way since then, haven't we? And even with our mp3s and cd burners I still make mixes... they just sound much, much better. And the best thing about them? You can put them away if you get sick of them, and take them back out later and re-love the songs all over again. The romantic one that I have only has 12 songs on it so far... it's referred to in our car (which is where we most frequently listen to it) as our sap-a-thon, while it plays. Here is what's on it... I Need You -- LeAnn Rhimes This song *had* to be first. It couples LeAnn's powerful voice with great lyrics... I need you like water, like breath, like rain. I need you like the mercy of Heaven's gate. There's a freedom in your arms that carries me through, I need you. My son refers to it as the goosebump song. Hello -- Lionel Richie This one is one of my favorite songs of all time. In fact, I wrote down it's lyrics in high school and gave them to my boyfriend (fairly new boyfriend at that) at the time. The words still mean a lot to me, especially when those first stirrings of affection develop. I've been alone with you inside my mind. And in my dreams I've kissed your lips 1000 times. I sometimes see you pass outside my door. Hello, is it me you're looking for? Cause I wonder where you are, and I wonder what you do. Are you somewhere feeling lonely, or is someone loving you? Tell me how to win your heart, for I haven't got a clue. And I want to tell you so much I love you. Through the Fire -- Chaka Khan This is another older song that has just always stayed with me. It was played at dances that I went to as a teen and a friend of mine even sang it for a competition. Chaka Khan has that soulful, deep voice that you just can't get enough of. Strawberry Wine -- Deana Carter Ooh... long lost forgotten love. This song tells of a girl's memories back to when love was a new experience and the ever common tale of the summer romance that fades away. How many of us can relate? Maybe that's why even the most un-country listeners liked this song right along with everyone else. I was caught somewhere between a woman and a child, one restless summer we found love growing wild, on the banks of the river on a well beaten path, it's funny how those memories they last like strawberry wine. How do I deal -- Jennifer Love Hewitt This, as far as I know, is the only song ever released by Jennifer Love Hewitt. I think the words can be taken either as dealing with love or dealing with troubles in love... just depends on how you hear them. The music caught my ear at first, but the words made it a necessity to my collection. How do I deal with you, how do I deal with me, when I don't even know myself or what it is you want from me. How do I deal with us, how do I know what's real, When I don't even trust myself or what it is I feel, and how do I deal? On My Own -- Les Miserables This isn't so much of a sappy, "love you forever" song as it is a unreturned love song. Sung by Eponine to Marius (whom she will never have) it talks about a girl who wanders at night pretending that she is with the man she loves...incidently and depressing enough, Eponine is then shot and killed not long after. But the song itself is beautiful. Sometimes I walk alone at night when everybody else is sleeping. I think of him and then I'm happy with the company I'm keeping. The city goes to bed, then I can live inside my head. This Woman Needs -- SheDaisy This is one from the Osborn sisters out of Utah... Kelsi, Kristyn, and Kassidy to be exact. The lyrics reflect perfectly the title when they talk about what this woman needs. This woman needs a safe place to land, the strength in your hands, to know you know what this woman needs, is somewhere to cry, so lay by my side, and I'll tell you, I'll tell you, what this woman needs. Stranger's Eyes -- Vanessa Williams Although this song was never released on the radio, it's lyrics quickly made it one of my favorite songs of Vanessa's. Off the Comfort Zone album, it speaks of love at first sight. Love Is -- Vanessa Williams & Brian McKnight While we are on the subject of Vanessa Williams... she happened to make a great little ballad in 1992 with Brian McKnight about the ups and downs of love. The song ended up on the "Beverly Hills 90210" soundtrack and was played at the end of one of the episodes. For awhile it had radio play and then faded away as fast as the popularity of the show did. But the song is powerful. Love can be very light or very dark at times and the lyrics reflect that. Save Your Love -- Great White Okay, I could probably list 100 hair band ballads that I loved in high school, however there are only two on this mixed cd. The first, by Great White, was one of their most popular song in the late 80s. Slow music, heavy guitar and powerful words... that seemed to be the layout of all the ballads back then. This one just happens to be one of my favorites. Love Bites -- Def Leppard Another not-so-love song really. Love Bites was that song that was played at every school dance (more than once), requested and dedicated regularly on the local radio station, and played in our house, my car, and walkman as much as possible. First, the music is different. Not only from all the other Def Leppard songs but from all the other songs that were out at that time as well as now. Can't Fight The Moonlight -- LeAnn Rhimes This is the newest addition to my cd. The song comes from the Coyote Ugly soundtrack (if you've read my review of the movie, you know I love it). Again, the music is different than most songs out there, and the lyrics talk about falling in love, even a forbidden love especially when you don't know or can't admit that it's happening yet. You can try to resist, try to hide from my kiss but you know, but you know that you can't fight the moonlight. |
