Another day at The Limbo Lounge

The Bottom Line Use common sense when deciding on a part-time job while in college, and keep others needs in mind.

My husband and I regarded the last credit card statement that arrived in the mail, reflecting our daughter's charges. She is currently a freshman at Albany U.

To limbo, or not to limbo....that is the question

The Limbo Lounge- $72.14
Pierce This- $45.00
Now Pierce That- $33.00

etc..etc.........
"Honey..what's the Limbo Lounge," I asked on the phone.
"OH,they were having a great going-out-of-business sale!"

Hmm, I thought.... Perhaps it is time for her to get that part time job at school?

She is currently working at Eckerds part time when she is home from college. But what about earning a few dollars when she is at school?

My husband and I have debated back and forth on this issue. You have the time spent away from studies, and you have the additional money spent on carfare and clothing to work at different jobs.

The best type of part-time job for any college student to get is what is known as Work Study. Do some investigating at your child's college to see if there is a work study program in place and what qualifications are needed to take this work study program. Back when I was in college, I worked work-study 15 hours a week at StonyBrook university Library. It was a cake-job, and most of the time I could hide away in a stack (cubicle) somewhere and do a little studying on my own!

Jobs off campus often require a difficult manipulation of student's time, and often cause roommate problems. Last semester, my daughter's roommate took a job at a popular retail store known as Old Navy. The job was night hours, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the morning! Needless to say, when she came back home, my daughter would awaken from a sleep and not be able to get back to sleep, and this became very disruptive to her health and studying.

Angela's recommendation

Overall, to weigh the consequences of a part-time job when you are in college, you need to account for the amount of money you will need to sustain the job: carfare, clothing, meals off campus, etc. and whether or not your hours will negatively impact your studying or impact your roommate or suitemate's lifestyle. Sometimes it is better to get a summer job and work two or three jobs and save up the money that you can use throughout the school year rather than jeopardizing your health and studying schedule during the school year.

Not to mention, you'll end up spending most of what you earn on those piercings and tattoos anyway... (sigh).
