PLANE FLIGHTS: Chances are you have a few places you like to visit often. Register for Travelocity, and you can tap into their great system called Fare Watcher. In Fare Watcher, you select up to five sets of arrival/destination flights. Then, when you log back into Travelocity, on the home page it shows you the cheapest flights available at that particular moment. But WATCH OUT! You may see a wonderful flight rate that disappears a few hours later. One morning my husband saw a plane flight from Philadelphia to New Orleans for about $120. By the time was called our relatives in New Orleans to arrange the particular date, the special fare had disappeared. Your best bet is to have a general idea of when you would like to travel so that you can snap up those cheap flights very quickly! If you are flexible about the airport you leave from/arrive to, the chances of getting a cheap flight are greater. We recently booked a flight from Philadelphia to Tampa on Midway for $113.50/person, which included taxes, etc. They also have a special area where you can find the cheapest flight if you are flexible with the travel dates. This is helpful because you don't have to keep on changing your profile in the Fare Watcher.
BOOKING THE FLIGHT: After we saw the cheap fare, we started to book the flight. As we went through the different menus, I did not find a seat selection site. There is a chance that after we submitted our credit card number, we could have been offered the seat selection option. I have returned to travelocity.com to search the site for customer service questions related to seat selection, and found nothing. Regardless, I found it more comfortable to call the airline directly (Midway) and tell them about this special rate on Travelocity. They had the special, and were able to book everything along with the seat selection. I was also surprised that they offered to mail out the tickets at no charge to me. Travelocity would cost $10.00, and uses Fed Ex. The only negative side about waiting for the tickets from Midway is that they take about 2 weeks to be delivered to your door. I am not sure if they had any other delivery options available. The bottom line is that it may be wise to book directly through the carrier if you want to save on delivery costs, but do not do this if the flight occurs within 2 weeks of booking it.
HOTELS: I have often compared hotel rates on the individual hotel web sites vs. Travelocity. I have found that Travelocity is usually about the same, or cheaper. It is worth it when you are booking a hotel to compare the two web sites, Expedia.com, and call the hotel's 1-800 number directly. You may find that there is a significant difference. The only negative thing about booking on Travelocity is that if you are enrolled in a special hotel guest program, such as the Six Continents Club for the Intercontinental, the hotel wants you to book through their number or web site, not through Travelocity. You may lose out on the special perks you get through your hotel guest program. Check the rules of your hotel guest program before booking through Travelocity.
SPECIAL DEALS and NEWS: This is a great feature of Travelocity. You can find deals to all different places, such as cheap plane flights to Europe and Australia. These deals vary every day. Great for people who are flexible and like to travel to new places.
CARS: I like to use this feature to give me a guideline about a reasonable price for a car rental. I belong to Alamo's Quicksilver program that allows me to rent my car without waiting for long lines at the car rental location. So, I can't say that I have actually used Travelocity to rent a car.
VACATIONS/CRUISES: There is a special section for booking these items. I have not booked any of these items, but it looks like there are great vacation deals if you are flexible with the destination.
