As a certified college admissions adviser, I undertook a tour of several Pennsylvania colleges and universities in March. Haverford stood out for the quality of its students and its freedom to pursue academic passions. If you're a student who likes the idea of sitting in the hallway of a dorm and discussing the day's lecture without feeling like a nerd, or a student who enjoys positive debate and the give and take of a liberal arts education, you'll find peers of like mind at Haverford.

The library has a solid religious studies section, which provides the opportunity for students who are wondering who they are and why they're here a great resource for a variety of opinions. I felt students weren't being taught what to think, rather how to think for themselves. This intellectual freedom is a college ideal supported by the professors and the school's mission.

In addition, the students learn to listen, especially during the sessions where the student body has to determine and ratify the semester's honor code. Every student with an opinion has the opportunity to hold the mike, and no one leaves until a consensus if formed.
