A Michigan Review 4 Years in the Making

by MichiganDave , May 05 '02
Pros: International environment, International Recognition, unbeatable educational value.
Cons: Extremely competitive, high living expenses.
It's burned into your consciousness; an enduring image. A giant Maize Block "M" on a Navy blue background. It represents many things to different people: arrogance, pride, achievement, intellectualism, athletics, hope and despair. I'm writing this...

Co-op housing as another option...

by taralee469 , Aug 14 '00
Pros: CHEAP, lots of fun people to live with, you get a voice in how decisions are made, most houses are pretty close to campus, free parking at most houses, pets allowed in some houses, men and women allowed to room together if desired
Cons: Don't get to pick your housemates, some people are slobs, not many single rooms
For a change of pace, I thought I'd give my opinion on the student co-ops near campus. Recognize that the co-ops are only loosely affiliated with the University itself, but because they house primarily UM students, this is probably the most appropriate...

Mary Markley Carcinogenic feast

by opie_fife , Jul 05 '00
Pros: Near the arboretum
Cons: industrial, remote, and potentially dangerous location
It has been a while since I graduated from the University of Michigan, but I still do remember those days, not so long ago, when my life was packed into half of a 12’ x 12’ cube at Mary Markley Hall. While I can’t say I remember all of my evenings or...

Go West Young Man (or Woman)

by colovion , Jun 21 '00
Pros: Location, Size, Linked to Union
Cons: Confusing Basement, Cafeteria Closes on weekends.
I was lucky enough to get into the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) In-residence when it was in West Quad Lloyd House freshman year. UROP itself wasn't all that great, but I sure did love West Quad.

West Quad is connected...

Looking for a little direction? You won't find it here.

by c-option , Jul 07 '00
Pros: cutting edge research, excellent archives program, great financial resources
Cons: often aimless in its direction, poor customer service orientation, frustrating for people with a very specific career goal, lots of group work
The School of Information at the University of Michigan is a relatively new school built on the back of a well-established graduate-level library science program. A reengineering of the curriculum in 1997 expanded the original focus to encompass a much...

Baits - We do it better in the Woods

by nate873 , Aug 31 '00
Pros: Awesome rooms, Some even have A/C! Very Quiet for those who like to study in your rooms.
Cons: No one knows where Baits is located
Baits? Where is Baits?

Baits is a dorm located on North Campus near Bursley. Most people that attend the University of Michigan do not even know that such a place exists. And those that do think it is just housing for graduate students.

Parking just got uglier

by colovion , Jul 07 '00
Pros: Great bus system, some free lots
Cons: Permits aren't free, few to buy, and free lots are far from campus.
I know many people have said that the parking situation is pretty bad in Ann Arbor in general and on the University of Michigan's campus in particular. Guess what? It's actually going to get MUCH worse for students.

The University of...

A Good Rigorous Education

by megdunn , Jul 29 '00
Pros: lots of opportunity on and off campus
Cons: you're just one in a sea of many
The University of Michigan is a large public school. Because of its size, it has a lot to offer. Also because of its size, it has some noticeable faults. The experience is, overall, what you make of it.

The Pros

Wolverines

by ParisLemon , Feb 06 '01
Pros: Education, great city, good people.
Cons: Weather, COST.
I attended the University of Michigan, and it was a great school. The education you receive is top notch. As long as you do your work and go to class you're assured to get a great education. That's hard to do sometimes, but in the end it's worth it....

Doesn't Qualify as an Institute of Higher Learning

by akal50 , Dec 24 '00
Pros: Inexpensive for Michigan residents, great for sports fans, great for party types.
Cons: Poor teaching, unavailable instructors, campus too spread out, poor social environment, too isolated.
Whenever I meet high school students who ask me if U of M is worth going to, I ask them if they like watching football, hockey, and basketball, if they can learn on their own, if a lot of their friends are also going to U of M, and if they own a car and ...
