Pros: Small classes and good instructors Cons: Parking can be a problem
When I first signed up for Western, I never thought of it as a real university based on the "party school" reputation that it had.
I found out that the engineering curriculum was much more demanding than I had anticipated. Western...

Pros: Great student life, big yet small Cons: Not a huge huge name

Pros: ?? Cons: big, town sucks, dorms suck

its basically a money-making corporation

Pros: a few excellent professors Cons: limited parking, hidden costs/fees, LOTS of bitter professors
I transferred to Western Michigan University (WMU) as a sophomore. I had pretty low expectations to start with, but I grew up 15 minutes away, so it seemed like a good, inexpensive, idea. I was wrong.
WMU tries to squeeze every penny out of its students with hidden costs/ fees and ridiculously expensive parking permits (when there are never enough parking places). Also, most classes (below the 400 level) are taught by TAs or adjunct professors (the part-timers who are paid like just barely above minimum wage) in jam-packed lecture halls. Advisors are always too busy to see you (or there's a 1 hr.+ weight).
On the plus side, there are some wonderful professors who teach at WMU. I changed my major to one that I enjoyed more, and really connected with a few professors. However, for every great professors, there are about 10 boring, pedantic, bitter profs. You just have to make the effort to seek out help. Nobody will ever "spoon-feed" you at this institution. This has been good for me, as it has taught me to be more resourceful and independent.
