When I first started to write this reviewed I looked all over Epinions website to find where I would place this review. I started out looking under the ‘Kids & Family’ section and to my surprise did not find it there. So I tried Health & Wellness, since it is something that could affect ones health, but also failed to find it located under that category as well.

So I decided to do a search on Alcohol Abuse and was very surprised to find it located in the ‘Education’ category, under ‘Colleges & Universities’. This made me wonder as to why Epinions would decide to place such a topic on this category? Which brings me to my review.

In today’s day and age one has to wonder why the US has such a high volume of people who abuse alcohol. A great deal of those people who abuse alcohol are between the ages of 17 – 25 years of age. And with such a high volume of alcohol abuse, I have to ask, what is being done about it to help resolve the issue? Well maybe not resolve the issue cause there has always been abuse and will always be abuse of one of the easiest and most legal drug one could get their hands on. As each year goes by we see more and more advertisements on TV of those being killed in accidents related to alcohol. But again I question, what else is being done about this growing issue.

Lets look at smoking for example and I think it is a great example to look at in this department. For years cigarettes advertised just about everywhere and in any way they thought that could get someone to buy their product. They put smoking on commercials, advertisements in magazines with cartoon characters, in moving with the “cool” actors, you could even find them at sporting advents on billboard as a sponsor for that event. You could buy clothing with the cigarette of your choice on them, drive down the road and see big signs with “super-like” models holding them with a smile. All in all the tobacco companies made it look cool to smoke and have made many different flavors to meet your smoking “needs”.

Then one day someone came long and said “Hey you know I don’t think it’s right for a cartoon camel to sell cigarette cause it makes young kids think its ok to smoke.” So they pulled all the cartoon characters from selling cigarettes and then someone just happen to bring up the fact that smoking is really bad for the health and should not be advertised at all. In fact they should pay for advertisements on why someone should not smoke. And guess what now there has been a bill past that states all of this. Smoking may not be against the law but tobacco companies cannot sale their products though advertisements such as signs and ads and clothing products. They can sponsor sporting events but not advertise.

So if this can be done with smoking, which is a leading cause of lung cancer and other well-known health issues, why can we not do something about the alcohol problem we have? Since alcohol is one of the leading causes of death with our young adults and teens you would think we would be doing about this issue. Alcohol can also cause problems to the liver and if with child can cause many complications. So why is it we still have not taken bigger steps in trying to resolve this issue.

For example, do you know or relies that during the Super bowl, one of the most popular commercials is for Budweiser beer? Well guess what folks it is. It’s one of the better-known commercials that happen during the Super bowl. And most people could not tell you anything about the ˝ time in the Super bowl but the commercials Budweiser puts out at that time. Or at least a few of my friends seem to only recall that much about ˝ time during the Super bowl. Not cause they are drunk or anything but because Budweiser is known to put out some very good and entertaining commercials.

Another example is what alcohol companies add into their commercials. They make it seem like you go out have a great time while drinking, pick up some great looking girl/guy, and the night is just one big party. Go out and drink to have fun. Is this the image we want our kids to have about alcohol?

Look at some of the advertisements they put out in magazines and such. All “sexy” looking people hold a bottle or can of some brand of alcohol laughing and having a good time, and then there is the billboard. One of the biggest billboard in the Dallas, Tx area is a Bush Beer billboard. It’s a big sign of the Rocky Mountains with a waterfall and real water flowing down the sign. The kicker about this sign is that it has the time on it and is off one of the major high ways going downtown. So it gets noticed not only cause it stands tall, stands out, and is a very neat sign to look at, but it also gives back to the community by giving them time. How funny is that.

Alcohol is also well known in sports, mainly NASCAR driving. Budweiser even has its own car in this sport. It’s not enough that they are posted everywhere on billboard and commercials and clothing but they also have to place their name on a car as it speeds around a track at 150 or so MPH. And we want our younger generation not to drink or at least not abuse it? Tell me where the common sense is in all this?

My whole point to this review is I think it’s about time we all take a stand and do something about this issue we have in the US. And I believe that that first step could be the same as we did with the tobacco companies. Stop the advertisements that drinking is all fun and games and one big party. Show more commercials of just what could happen if you or someone you know decides to drink and drink. Cut the clothing line and don’t allow their logo to be placed on any type of clothing. And this is a big one here, do we really need a Budweiser car? I understand sponsoring the sport and all but having a car like this in my eyes is a bit much.

Believe it or not folks, advertisements sale. And your kids see those advertisements just about everywhere they go. Getting drunk is not all fun and games. It’s not one big party and I think it’s about time we take the steps and change the way alcohol is advertised. So what if it cuts in their pockets. I am more worried about the kids I see growing up in the world today. So what beer manufactures loosing a few bucks cause they cannot get our young adults to buy beer through advertisement.

I know this will not solve the whole problem with alcohol abuse but isn’t it about time we start somewhere? They say the first steps are always the most important! So why don’t we take that first step? It’s not going to hurt us any but instead help us save a few lives and a few kids and young adults from being sold into that drinking is cool and one big party. So in closing I have to say that I do not agree with Epinions placing this topic where they have decided to place it, cause it involves more then just our young adults in school. Even though they seem to abuse it a bit more then other age groups. But I cannot state strongly enough about how I feel we should take bigger steps in doing something about this issue we do have.
