Adelphi U. and the reasons we go to Hofstra bars...

Written: Feb 08 '00 (Updated Mar 24 '01)
Pros:Easy to meet everyone in it's high-school-like environment.
Cons:Nothing to do on weekends; you sure as hell better know someone with a car.
The Bottom Line: Adelphi is what you make of it. If you're looking for a good time, you'll find one. The problem is, you have to look kinda hard...

In a nutshell, Adelphi is what you make of it. I don't know anyone that absolutely loves it here, but you gotta appreciate the closeness of the people that actually do try to make something of this place. Given the fact that like 70% of the students here are commuters that have no interest in experiencing college, it's not the type of school you want to attend if you hope to make some great memories in the prime of your life. On the other hand, guys can have a great time: the ratio of girls to guys around here is something along the lines of 7 to 1. At the same time, it makes it really hard for fraternities to thrive with so few guys to come out of the woodwork. Greeks have a place here that is loved by the students yet seemingly hated by the higher-ups such as the board of trustees and other administrative-related organizations that believe Greek life = bad students. The school has changed a bit though--most of the buildings have been renovated and enrollment is higher than it's been in a while, making it impossible to find good parking. If you ask most people what they're doing on a Thursday night (that is, of course, not including the socially deprived), the common response would be "hitting Bogarts" or "heading out to Montereys." That's not saying much about the bars that are closer to Adelphi, such as the classic "Bean," aka JP McGeever's. It's a shame that there aren't closer bars and that the scene at Adelphi is so dismal, but sometimes you have to search to find a good time. Anyway, people that come here usually fall into a few categories, sometimes one, sometimes more than one. Those include athletes that are getting free rides, smart kids that are getting free rides, kids whose parents won't let them get off godd*mned Long Island, kids who mistakenly heard that there's a good program for International Students (the politically correct term for foreigners), or a good program for those with special needs, or for PA majors, and kids whose parents work here (and thus get free rides). I won't say which category I fall in. :) Everyone here likes something about their experience here, whether it be the tranquility that is imposed by the Garden City communist party-driven government, or the closeness to NYC, or (is there anything else...?). So, if you're a commuter student who's looking for a quiet school where you can meet some cool people and can get a free ride, this is the place for you. If you feel like you need something bigger a la UMass, then get the hell away from here. At the very least, come visit. Just don't come on a weekend because no one will be here.
