My advice to you is to start drinking heavily!!Aug 06 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Okay. So I am kidding. Do not proceed to the local party store to purchase a fifth of Jack Daniels or Jim Beam. Do not proceed to chug heavily until the room spins while you lay down. That would start a vicious, vicious cycle. To paraphrase Homer Simpson, alcohol is the cause and solution to all of life's problems. You really do not want to go down that beaten path. In all seriousness, most college students will get the blues many times during their four (or five, or six...or seven, or eek eight?) years at school. The blues can be mild or massively severe (AKA manic depression). The blues can come from just about anything. Perhaps your significant other just dumped you (That b$#@%/a@#$%@e!). Or maybe you just flunked your midterms. Maybe you are gaining a tad more than that "freshman 15" that everyone told you about. Either way, some things will get you down in college and they will be very difficult to deal with. My advice is the following... Talk it out with people Sitting around, building up sadness and anxiety will not help the problem. Talk to your roommate. Call your family members. Vent online to your online buddies. Do whatever you have to, just get it out of your body and into the open. Keep busy Again, being lethargic to your sadness will not help things. Keep your mind off of it. Take up a new hobby. Exercise. Go to the mall and laugh at the weirdos there (they are more funked up than you). Do not lie in bed or on the couch in the fetal position under a blanket thinking all will go away (plus, you like a turtle when you do that). Stay optimistic Things will only get better. They always do. Be thankful for what you do have. Conclusion Having the blues in school is underrated. You aren't the only one dealing with problems. Even the overly-happy people you know have sadness they deal with as well. This should be the happiest and most exhilarating time of your life. Don't waste it being pissy and sad. Trust me, you'll miss the pain you have when you are a happy little camper sometime later in your life. -mark |
