Unless you are applying to the top 25 of the nations best universities, college applications are largely a buyers market. A student with above average grades, and decent SAT scores can study anything anywhere. If however you want your presence to grace the hollow halls of the IVY league then you are in for quite the uphill struggle. Facing stiff competition and acceptance rates around 15% chances are you might be shut out unless you are one of the strongest students out there. MAke sure to have the best grades possible in the hardest classes, this doesn't mean an unweighed 4.0, but not much worse then 3.8, and SAT scores in the 1500 range are good. Have an interesting essay. Try not to pontificate on some weighty issue, but rather simply write an anecdotal account of a little adventure which taught you something. Make sure your essay has life, and keeps the read4er interested. You should have a list of 2 or 3 outside activities, and recomendations from teachers who really like you. Try applying early decision to show the school how dedicated you are to them. If you satisfy all those things chances are you might make it.
