Broaden your HorizonsFeb 13 '00 Write an essay on this topic.While it is great to go work during the Summer (As I state in my Summer Internship Review,) traveling around the country and the world is great experience itself. Meeting new people, learning about and experiencing new cultures, being a minority (as White Americans are around most of the world,) and having new experiences are all helpful for young folks. With these experiences, as the global market place rapidly includes the entire world, the skills and knowledge developed through these travels go a long way to dealing with the new world. I have not only enjoyed my world travels, but have also come to realize that they have helped me cope with folks from around the world. In my job, aside from dealing with Managed Healthcare Insurance Payors, I must also deal with international patient populations. Having been immersed in different cultures where I was the outsider or minority, I know just how these folks can feel. It takes an understanding of this to know how one can better deal with this population, which can be a good clientele. Traveling as a student has other advantages also. For instance many places offer discounts to students. This is because in many cases they hope that a good experience will make the student a life user of a provider's services. Hotels are one of the types of organizations who like to treat students well. (Do not expect free rooms at the Hyatt or 4 Seasons, but I am sure you get the picture.) Depending upon where you travel you can meet others like you. Students can learn a lot from each other as they travel the world. One focal spot in Australia is Cairns, where the backpack crowd is met with open arms. If at all possible, I recommend that one travel as much as possible. While still a student you can get discounts that make your travel less expensive. It may also be possible to stay with friends from college if you get to know your international student population. You will learn so much in the Summer about the rest of the world, that it may seem like the history professor is behind times. Go for it and enjoy the world, as it is out there for all to see!!!  |
