How to avoid the college blues ----- Dealing with Tough Times in School?Jan 01 '01 (Updated Oct 21 '05) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line College can be tough, but here are some ways to get by. So, what are the college blues? They are what you get when you are a student who hasn't been away from the family nest for long spurts of time, and this is the first time that you have been sent out on your own. This is the case for most people who are heading into college, and I thought that it would be helpful if I listed some of the things that can be done by anyone as a way to avoid catching a hard-case of these blues. First off, the person must accept that eventually the blues will set in. It is a fact that eventually, if not sooner, then later, the college student will think back to what once was. They will think of a time when life was easy, and they had all the food available that they needed. Or maybe it will be the thought that they never had to worry about money before, and now it has become an important part of the college experience. With that realization out of the way, I can move on with this review. The easiest thing that anyone can do to deal with the college blues is to give yourself something to do other than mope. At college, incoming students have a wide selection of activities that they can devote themselves to as soon as they walk in the door. At first, some of the presentable activities might seem to be scarry, or downright hard, but the realistic approach says that you have to try something before you can actually say that it is too hard. Student Government is one of the options that is available. If you are living in the Greek system, or in the Residence Halls, there are many open positions to run for. They can range from the President of the organization all the way to activity directors. All of which I have seen first-year students do well in. There are also the sports teams who are always looking for walk-on athletes. At many colleges there is an intramural sports program that is offered to students. What this consists of, is sports that all of the students in the given college can participate in. I myself participate in basketball, softball, and football. There are also many student groups, and clubs that you can join that have many different interests and beliefs. The important thing to do, is get involved though. By getting involved, you can grow as a person, learn new things, and make many new friends. This is what keeps you from gaining the heavy cases of the blues. But, if you ever do get a severe case of the blues, remember that semester breaks come on really fast, and that you always have something to look forward to :) |
