how to get that internship
Apr 12 '00
First of all, you should realize that company's who are offering internships are mainly looking for college juniors. Why? because they have a chance of keeping you after college if they like you.
For freshman and sophomores, don't give up all hope. Still, just don't be disappointed if you aren't the one picked. My advice is try to get a job over the summer that can build up your resume so when you are a junior you have a better chance of getting that important internship offer.
Now, where do you find internships? First off - check with your University. Most have some type of career services, and they do have help with getting internships. You can drop off copies of your resume for companies to retrieve if they are interested. I found that if I went to the career services website at my school - there were internet searches that turned up AMAZING results. Try to find out if your school has these services, if not at least sit down with a counselor and ask them the best way to do.
Still stumped? Try monster.com or or other job related websites. They have their own internship sections which can really be helpful in narrowing down the search. Most of these company's are easy to reach through email, and it may be beneficial for you to put your resume on the WWW for easy viewing.
Finally, if you have ANY connections, USE them. It seems like nowadays everyone knows someone, and this is a great opportunity to learn something. If you really don't know anyone, spend some time on the Internet and find something that fits what you're looking for.
Good luck in the search!
