What you can do NOW!Dec 19 '00 Write an essay on this topic. After all the college applications are off and running to those Admissions Offices, the next thing to worry about is FINANCIAL AID. Everyone wants it and needs it! Where are you going to get all the $$$$ to pay for college? The two answers that come to mind are Scholarships and filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). 1. Scholarships I have to admit, looking for scholarships is a pain. Many of them are very specific on candidates that are eligible, and many include essays and other materials that need to be sent in. Who said getting free money was easy? The best way to find out information about scholarships is asking your counselor or doing it yourself by looking up FREE scholarship informational sites that cater to your specific personal information. I visited some scholarship sites, and I think these are the best so far: *www.fastaid.com - A very extensive search engine created to find scholarships that fit your profile. You can also save some information about scholarships to visit later on. www.collegeboard.org - Not only can you sign up for SAT's here, you can also look up scholarship information. It might be a bit cluttered though. *www.finaid.org - A comprehensive guide to financial aid. Everything you want to know! Many of the profile fill-ins are boring and repetitious for various websites, but it's worth the trouble! Beware: Please do no buy into those "You are guaranteed thousands of dollars if scholarships...if you buy our such and such book for 50 bux." You can find the same kind of information for FREE. Don't look for con-agencies that want your money! 2. FAFSA This financial aid form is used to determine your eligibility for aid. Basically, the people from Princeton look over all your and your parents' assets, and then assess how much money you can contribute to your college education. You can also apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov! The important thing about the FAFSA is getting it in on time. Try to turn it in as soon as possible after January 1st! Be sure to have your parents' tax forms from last year to refer to. Make the best estimate! Don't forget to note any extenuating circumstances that might affect your family's income! That's financial aid in a nutshell! |
