Create life-long learners!
by Lytabyron | Dec 05 '00
I home schooled four of my children for six years. I was not satisfied with the quality of education in our public school close to home. When my daughter, Aurora started kindergarten she was already reading. They had no TAG (Talented and Gifted) program...

You sound like such a great mom. I am new to homeschooling, and don't know if I will do it beyond this year. I wrote an opinion on it as well, but it is great to see people who have done it for a while. One of my lingering questions that I raise in my review, is what if I do homeschooling for a while and then decide to quit. How easy was it for your children to transition back into regular school?

Thanks Anniemal!
I appreciate your comments. At the time I felt homeschooling was my only option. Now, I feel that the schools and the teachers do a wonderful job. I think parents need to stay involved in activities and organizations at the schools in order to have their kids know they do care about what is happening. Some people who homeschool have such a narrow focus that they do more harm than good to their children.

Even though I disagree with you on homeschooling, your review was very well-written! Good Job! I guess in some cases when the school district cannot cater to the a child's specific interest, homeschooling may be the only option. Interesting indeed!

You are right, it should take a big commitment. Some people take it on because their kids are unhappy at school and are unprepared for all it entails. Everyone needs to realize that you will become the major influence in your child's life. I have six kids and after home schooling for six years I was burning out and realized I had to give up some of my responsibilities and delegate. I do maintain a close relationship with the schools and feel the teachers are doing a wonderful job!
Thanks,
Kristi

I don't think I have the patience to
home school. Takes a big commitment.
