GRE--YUCKJul 19 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Oh…the GRE…. A source of much agony for potential graduate students!!!! Everybody wants to know the key to doing well on the GRE. Is there a book? Is there a course? Is it just a natural skill people are just born with that has no bearing on graduate school potential? Well in my not so expert opinion, it is a funky combination of all the above. Graduate school is really about jumping through hoops. If you have the motivation to go to graduate school, you probably have the motivation do the work. I have met really intelligent people who just don’t do well on standardized tested. I have also met some idiots that do incredible. I think, some people are intimidated by standardized test. Also, some people don’t have the ability to work fast with pseudo accuracy. Some people are too anal; spending too much time scrutinizing one question while losing valuable time. I know people are reading this thinking I am just consoling myself because I didn’t score so well. I actually did pretty well, but I still think the GRE doesn’t tell universities much about incoming students. I have heard some universities regard GRE scores highly while others don’t. As for hints for success- read as much as you can. The more you read, the better your vocabulary. For me, doing practice test really helped. It improved my speed and my accuracy. I also made flash cards for the vocabulary. I concentrated on a high frequency list of vocabulary from a Kaplan review book. I also made flash cards of roots common to the English language. Remember the GRE is not the end of the world. If you do badly, you can take it again the next month, and if you work hard, you can improve your score. |
