If I can do it, anyone can!

I did things sort of backwards when it came to attending
college. I graduated High School and then had the choice
of living at home and attending a community college, or
going out into the REAL world and living!

Yes, I chose to say adios to my Parents and head out
on my own at age 17. I rented an apartment and got
a real job that paid real money. It was scary having
all of those new bills and responsibilities.. but
I was in heaven. Free at age 17! What could be better?

I did this for 4 years until I realized that I was still
stuck in the same job, with the same pay, and there
was no room for advancement due to my lack of a degree.
I knew that I could make a lot more money and chose
any sort of job I wanted..if only I had that degree.

I knew I would be stuck in my tiny apartment forever and
living paycheck to paycheck if I didn't do something fast.
I couldn't imagine going to college and trying to
support myself. That would take forever to graduate!
Was it worth it?

Well, I decided to work full time and attended classes
during the evenings and lunch time. I had a plan
to finish in.. <drum roll> 12 years. Yes, at this
pace, it would take me 12 years to get my bachelors
degree in business. The thought made me cry more
than once. I was totally unmotivated to continue.

I finally decided I needed to step up and focus more
on my education. I decreased my work hours and
took on as many courses as I could. I packed in
summer school and went full time while working. It
was great, the bills were being paid, and I was
heading toward my goal. It was a slow ride but I
was headed in the right direction. It felt good.

Now I am in my Senior year. ahhh. Finally at the ripe age
of 26. I have taken off work for a year and am attempting
to complete 45 more hours and graduate in May 2001 with
a GPA of 3.4. I can do it! What a feeling to see the
light at the end of the tunnel and know a year from
now, I will have that degree in my hand and the
freedom to do whatever I choose in my career.

Sure, this years we will have to skimp a bit due to
my not working, but it is well worth it. The feeling
of accomplishment is greater than any amount of
money. I can begin my career next year and truly
be in the real world!
