Sports for the College Bound.Feb 26 '00 Write an essay on this topic. If you're coming into the world of academia mainly via your accomplishments in athletics, be prepared for a lot of new things. College is designed to teach you to adapt and change within your environment, and to meet new challenges head on. Athletically speaking, I go to a Division II school and play baseball. The competition isn't that tough at this level. It's mostly how disciplined the team is. A good coach can make almost any team at this level competitive. The real problem comes with academics. An athlete is generally in college to try to get to the pros. I'm not going to lie and say that academics are all you need to focus on, Brian Bozworth graduated with a degree in business from OSU and couldn't read. I know it happens, and I know how it works. If you're good enough, grades don't matter. Sadly, most of us are not that gifted at athletics, and will at some point have to rely on our education to get us through life. Always remember that anything can happen (just ask Bozworth) and that you'll always need something to fall back on. The best advice I could give to any athletic recruit would be to get to know your coach and your teammates, and try to find the ones who are there mostly for the education. Be careful what you do as a team prank, so much can get you in trouble now. Frat parties turn into gang rape cases, running the gauntlet becomes a 60 minutes headline, and fist fighting is now a felony. You're not in high school any more; you're in the real world. An adult environment has the same expectations of people whether they are there for athletics or they’re for academics. They expect us to act like adults. I know that it's tempting to play pranks and stuff, my team does it too. But I simply say, "Sorry guys, I have work to do tonight," and excuse myself from the proceedings. I don't need their affirmation to tell me I'm popular or accepted. I don't need to ruin my future by doing something stupid with my team today that will haunt me for the rest of my life. Make your own decisions. The real world holds only you responsible for them. |
