After reading some of the other opinions I note a missing discussion of the academics available to students.
I am an alumnus and so is my father. Personally, I can say the business school was a rewarding experience for me. I was also active in the fraternity system and would recommend this experience. In my fraternity A E Pie, I am proud of the fact we consistently had the highest GPA of all fraternities on campus. The fraternity was filled with Pre-med. students, Pre-Law students, business and architecture majors as well as music majors. As you can see U OF M offers a diverse education and an opportunity to meet people from all over the world. The school is able to lure some of the best teachers away from Ivy League type schools with the benefits of living in the Miami area. The school also has many impressive graduate schools to further your education.
Yes, this is a warm and beautiful campus and the South Miami area is a vacation destination. Yes, I would love to turn the clock back and go to the University of Miami all over again. It has always been my opinion that, if you want to get a good education you can at the University of Miami. College is the last step, where young adults learn and grow before they enter the "real world". Why not go to a school where you can enjoy the fruit of your effort. Why freeze in upstate New York like my sister did for 4 years.
I must warn parents and future students that this school had a very high flunk out rate in the first year, as many students can not manage the opportunities available at this wonderful location. Some of the students were just home sick, as many of the student population come from all over the US and the world. I personally found my network of support with a fraternity; however, I do recognize that now all fraternities are alike. A parent may want to inquire about the academics of the fraternity or sorority population - this information should be available from the Dean of Students. Last warning - your child may be heading for trouble if he or she tells you they were studying around the pool! To future students, this is a great opportunity for the next 4 or more years of your life - live and learn.
