For a Fun, Cheap Getaway: Go To Someone Else's HomeDec 31 '00 Write an essay on this topic. So, you want to do something exciting for Spring Break? If you are like me (poor, with an unreliable car) this may seem like a distant fantasy. However, I have found a nearly foolproof method to having a great spring break in a new place, relatively cheap and pain-free. Go home with a friend! Now this does not work if you happen to be friends with people from your home neighborhood, but most of us meet a lot of new people at college, from other areas of the country, and sometimes the world. Last spring break I went home with a friend from Toronto, Canada. It was a blast. I had never been to Canada before, so the entire trip was a new experience for me. We stayed with her parents for six days, so I did not have to pay for a hotel or much food. She gave me a wonderful tour of the city, avoiding the things she knew I was not interested in. It was great because my friend knew where she was going, the subway lines, the way to exchange money, and all the other pesky things that tourists typically have to figure out themselves when visiting new places. She also took me to some great, out of the way places that I never would have found as a tourist. The most memorable is a 200-year-old theater in downtown Toronto that had wonderful English actors in a brilliant play. My friend also had a good time, showing me her home, the places that she enjoyed, and giving me tours of her city. I must admit that I have done other spring break type things, such as a week of skiing, and this week at my friend's home was the best spring break I have had. We relaxed a lot, spent a lot of time in her parent’s hot tub, ate a lot of wonderful home-cooked food, and went and did the things that we decided were fun. There was no pressure to go out and do a lot of stuff because we were paying to be there, and we did not have to deal with the typical travel problems one encounters as a tourist. It was a very leisurely, relaxing and enjoyable spring break. In my opinion, going home with a friend is a great way to spend your spring break. You not only get to see another part of the country, but you get to know your friend better. You meet his/her parents, see the place where she grew up, meet her old friends, and do the things that your friend does when she goes home. For me, this was the best part. However, if you do not know your friend very well, you may want to do some investigating before you agree to head home with him/her for a week. Ask about what their parents are like, what do they do for entertainment, and what type of food do they eat. It is also important to realize that if you are going home with a friend, that friend may expect you to return the favor someday. I have also had friends come home with me for spring break, and have found that this can also be a lot of fun. I had a friend for a large city in New England come home with me for a week. This was absolutely hilarious because I live on a huge farm in the middle of nowhere. My friend had a great time trying to learn how to herd cattle, ride a three-wheeler, and feed pigs. I had fun teaching him how to do it, and of course, my family was very excited to have a “city slicker” around to show off for. I am a big proponent of going home with others for spring break. It tends to be fairly inexpensive, and it is usually much safer than the typical spring break locales. To me, it also seems to be much more relaxing than a wild week on the beach or skiing. I prefer to spend my week away from school calmly de-stressing with a good friend, seeing some interesting sights, and getting plenty of rest. If you cannot finagle an invitation home with a friend for break, invite them to your home. Maybe next year you can go home with them. |
