Work-Study is a fantastic option for studentsJan 27 '00 Write an essay on this topic. When I entered college I had no idea what I was really going to "BE" when I grew up. After a series of pointless, minimum wage jobs that weren't helping anything I landed my first work-study position. For the first time as a college student I had a job that had some relevance to what I was doing - rather than feeling as though work was disconnected from school, or that I was being put in a financial vise, or that I didn't have enough time to get it all done. Work-study positions have the advantages of: 1. Generally being on campus 2. Generally being under the direction of a tenured or tenure track person 3. Paying more than the local 'standard minimum' 4. Generally having more flexible schedules, and more understanding supervisors about that final exam you need extra study time for Don't get me wrong, work-study positions aren't usually a cake walk and they AREN'T free money like scholarships. They don't require any less time or dedication than any other job, in fact I frequently found that they required more. What they are, or at least what they were to me, is a foot in the door to learn more than your textbooks will tell you. I took positions to explore new fields and new (to me) ways of thinking. I hooked up with several mentors accidentally through my work-study positions, by virtue of working with people in the same fields I was interested in. |
