GOD, I'm glad I had a bathrobe...

I just started college this August... In my first week of living in a college dorm we had three fire alarms. They tend to happen a lot in dorms... (I've heard that it really stinks during winter when there's snow outside).... In any case, the first one caught me while I was in the shower. GOD, I'm glad I had a bathrobe!!!! I was out of my room during the second one, but I was sleeping peacefully during the third one, which took place at 5:30 in the morning. It was kind of cold outside, and the sprinklers were on, so that bathrobe, once again, proved to be a great investment. Plus, living in a dorm with co-ed bathrooms, the bathrobe really adds to my sanity.

Basically, what I'm saying is:
BRING A BATHROBE!!!

Remember when going to college that you can always buy things there. This is a particularly useful thing to remember if your college is not near your home. However, when making a list of things to buy at school, make sure they're things that you won't need for the first few days.

First, examples of things to buy there:
+ A drying rack (You need it now, you're doing your own laundry! Plus, it's good for towels)
+ Stereo/Computer/Answering machine/Refrigerator/Microwave/Toaster Oven (You'll probably want or need most of them, but they're all big and bulky and you probably don't want to carry them in your suitcase. Plus, you and your roommates may want to split the cost, or decide on which kind to buy together. The kitchen appliances may not be allowed in your dorm, so make sure to check first. Plus, if you live in a suite, they may already be there.)
+ Food (You should always keep a stash in your room. I recommend: cereal, fruit, breakfast bars, peanut butter, jelly, bread, etc. Basically, you'll get tired of cafeteria-type food, or you won't have time with all your studying to go get some.)
+ School supplies/books (You won't know exactly what you need until you get there. I really recommend getting a 1" binder for each subject, with dividers for each binder to separate notes, homework, old tests, etc..)
+ Liquid Dishwashing Soap, Laundry Detergent, All-Purpose Spray Cleaner
+ Pillow and blankets (They're bulky and a pain to travel with)
+ Reading and desk lamps

Second, examples of things you'll probably need right away:
+ Towels
+ Shampoo, Conditioner, Hairbrush
+ Shower gel/soap, razor, washcloth, sponge, etc. (you'll probably also want a shower caddy so you don't have to carry it all separately each time you want to shower)
+ Shower shoes (Community showers aren't always fun to walk barefoot in)
+ Clothes! (You don't need too many... jeans are good... think all-purpose, and bring a few out-of-season clothes too. You never know what the weather will be like. Especially in Boston.)
+ Dishes (I brought two sets of everything. More silverware would be nice, though...)
+ Toothbrush/toothpaste
+ Retainer (if you have one, of course)
+ Alarm clock
+ Sheets (You'll probably want 2 or 3 sets-- for when you're washing one. I brought 1 set of cotton sheets for hot weather, and 2 sets of jersey sheets for anytime. I'll probably get flannel sheets later. Don't forget that most dorm beds require extra-long sheets!)
+ Pain medicine, allergy medicine, etc.

Third, examples of things your parents can ship to you:
+ Rollerblades
+ Winter clothes
(Okay, that was a short list... actually, tomorrow I'm supposed to receive packages with my own blades, blender, some warmer clothes, mail that's arrived at my house while I've been gone, etc.)

Fourth, examples of things you'll probably need/want:
+ A clipboard (with those teeny-tiny little writing thingies that they have in lecture halls, a clipboard comes in handy)
+ Photos from home, and anything else that makes you happy (i.e. favorite stuffed animals)
+ Headphones (Believe me, your roommates will LOVE you if you have these... and they'll hate you if you don't)
+ Favorite books (One of my roommates has a book called "Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook... it's a great book... she also has the "Absolute Beginner's Cookbook"... it's good for laughs. It has a recipe for scrambled eggs)
+ Letter writing stuff/birthday cards/thank you notes/stamps/envelopes (Your friends from home will probably be pleasantly surprised to receive birthday cards... and your mom will be happy.)
+ Anything you need when you're lonely/sad

Basically, think of things that you use on a daily or regular basis. The last few weeks/days before you need to pack make a list of everything you use as you use it. It'll make packing easier, and you're less likely to forget things.

Now, the #1 thing that you absolutely MUST have in college:
A BATHROBE!!!!
