What do I know about Homeschooling?

My opinion is about two children I have in my daycare who are homeschooled. Who have been in my care for almost 3 years. They stay with me from 7:45am until 4:45pm Mon-Fri. while their parents work. They are 9 and 6 years old. Great kids, well mannered and sweet.

I have no problem with parents homeschooling their children, in fact if I had known more about it 15 years ago, my son may have been homeschooled.

What I'm concerned with is these two particular children. The 9 year old can't read. With the parents working full time jobs, I can't understand how they have the energy to properly educate the children in the evening. I understand they get 1- 2 hours each evening of schooling and the lack of is reflecting on the oldest. Their social skills are very poor. They have either preschool aged children to interact with here, or my teenage son and his friends after school. They can't seem to get along with other children. The 6 year old girl clings to me all day. I try my best to do educational things with them as often as I can. The parents have asked me NOT to try and teach them. And I respect their reasons. They don't want to confuse them since I have no skills in that area. But they do encourage educational activities such as encouraging them to read and watch educational shows (Which are usually preschool level).

They go to Church on Sunday and the little boy is in boy scouts each Tuesday. Is this enough social skills for a child?

If I had homeschooled my son, he would need to spend the day learning. I would have encouraged him to be more active in church and social activities so that he would be able to interact with children his age. That seems so important for children to build their social skills. To be taught how to get along and communicate.

I do admire parents who homeschool their children. And I'm not writing this because I'm against homeschooling. There was a child from St. Louis Mo. who was homeschooled and won the spelling bee. I don't know if it was just for our state or national. So I know it's possible to give your child a better education. But I also believe it takes alot of long hours and dedication to achieve that. In the case of these two children, I know their parents are doing what they feel is best for them. But in the eyes of someone looking in, it is clear to see they are missing out by not being in a regular school.
