Apply for Scholarships to Lighten the Financial Burden!

Paying for college is a heavy burden that most people must face to attend colege. Anything that you can do to ease that burden will help both you (the parents) and the student.

My advice to you is to START YOUR SEARCH AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, even as early as 10th or 11th grade! There are many places for you (as a parent or a student) to find FREE money -- money that does NOT have to be paid back, like scholarships and grants.

There are lots of places to investigate, beginning with your child's school guidance counselor. They deal with colleges on a regular basis, and can aid you in your search. My son's school publishes a regular newsletter that gives you constant updates on college scholarships that become available.

The Internet offers a vast variety of sites where you can investigate colleges, search for scholarships, and get financial aid assistance (for free) like FastWeb.com, GoCollege.com, Review.com, FreeScholarships.com, Finaid.org, FedMoney.org, Supercollege.com and more. I soon will be adding my reviews on some of the services that I have been using.

You should also check with the colleges that your child might be interested in attending to see what scholarships they offer (some offer grants and scholarships that are exclusively for students that attend their school).

Lots of companies offer scholarships (like CocaCola, Tylenol, WalMart, and more). Sometimes they are listed in your local newspapers or at your local stores.

It is EXTREMELY important to note that whenever you do apply for any of the scholarships, you must follow the instructions given exactly! If they say they want 15 copies of your essay, or require a resume, send them exactly what they are asking for. You don't want to be disqualified for not following directions. And don't miss any deadlines! Keep a calendar that you can use specifically to keep dates for college interviews, application deadlines, and other special events.

My advice is to check out as many sources as you can as early as you can. Apply for all of the ones your child is qualified for. College is very expensive (tuition, books, room and board, personal items, computers, food, transportation, cell phones), and any assitance that you can get (that is, FREE MONEY) will make it much easier for you. You might be lucky enough to NOT have to take out any loans to pay for the cost of education.

Maybe, with all of the sources available, your child could be one of the lucky ones who gets to attend college for FREE!
