What Should I Do if My Student is Unhappy? ------ Don't worry, Be Happy!Dec 20 '00 (Updated Oct 24 '05) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line First take a deep breathe, and then read my Epinion College is a scary place. There is no 2 ways about it. College is a scary place. It is the last giant step for people before the real world comes on full force. It is the last battle-ground that must be traversed before the job replaces recess. Recess for teenagers is of course the free time that they have between everything else. That free time evaporated in the real world, and after high school it shrinks even more. But there are many other factors that also make college a scary place. The step up from high school to college is very large indeed. In high school kids have some freedoms, but there is also that safety blanket of having your parents sitting right behind you in case you fall for most people. In high school there is also the cliques that are sitting there to protect us. Even though we can find a dozen different things wrong with cliques, the fact is that they are supportive. Once college comes into the picture, the cliques dissapear and students go from being the top-dog seniors at high school, to being freshmen who know absolutely nothing going into college. They don't know where to go, what to do, and how to do anything. This is was leads to an unhappiness. If a student doesn't fit in right away, or doesn't seem to be having as much fun as they thought they would, the unhappiness begins to set in. Its simply a fact of life that nobody can be 100% happy 100% of the time. Eventually all college students hit that point where they aren't in the best of moods, and they can't seem to get on the "right" foot. All the securities that they have had from living at home are gone, and sometimes people just don't know what to do. In my experience, the first reality shock I had was not having a never-ending supply of food anymore. All of a sudden, I had to get my food for myself, instead of just being able to reach in the fridge or the cupboard for a snack. I also had nobody looking over my shoulder to make sure that I was doing all of my school work too, so I started to slack off a little bit. What this causes is a lack of self-confidence for a short while. And this is nothing to be worried about. All students will go through that phase where they are unhappy about school, class, or their position in the swing of things, but it will pass. Just know that in the end college is a fun place to be and should be enjoyed, not feared. |
