But neither is the "real world" - whatever the hell that is. The fact is that reality is irrelevant. This is not to say that you should ignore the reality of a bus as you sit in the middle of the street. This is also not to say that we are batteries in some gigantic computer ala a certain cheesy sci-fi flick. This IS to say that you make college what it is. You determine whether you get drunk on Friday or go to the movies with that special someone or sit in your closet of a dorm room doing work that is meaningless. The fact is that you have free time in between the classes and the meetings and the homework. This may or may not be more or less than what you will have when you graduate and have a job... if you have a job. What is certain is that you have a life to live. You have four or five... or six years to live it while in an environment that caters to YOU. You will never again be surrounded by such a large population of people your age. You will never again be offered so many opportunities to learn every little thing that you ever wanted to know - not classes, but extracurricular clubs and organizations. You will never again have a 21st birthday where people will offer you free alcohol and strangers will buy you drinks. Don't rush through college. Don't imagine you are doing this so that you can live a better life when you graduate. Begin the better life now.
