Visit Several Campuses before Applying

It is important to visit many college campuses before you apply to the schools. As expensive as it may be to visit colleges far away, it would be worse to get there on the first day and find that it's location is not compatible with the way you want to live.

For example, find out if the campus is in the middle of the city or if it is in a small town. Find out if the campus is just buildings on a city street and not really a "campus" at all. You may be able to ask these questions of personnel on the telephone, but it is not the same as seeing it yourself.

It is also important to talk to current students while you are visiting the campus. Ask lots of questions based on what you do and do not want in a college campus. For example, you'll want to know if there are lots of parties going on all the time (this may be positive or negative to you), you'll want to know what school sponsored activities are really like, you'll want to know how good the security in the dorms are and what dorm life at this particular college is like. There are many other questions you will want to ask as well, including questions about professors, classes (are they big or small?), financial aid, etc.

You may think that you can just ask at the registrar's office and you may get answers to some of your questions, but you will get more honest answers from students. Talk to more than one student. They may have different opinions and it is good to hear all sides.

While you are on campus, visit the bookstore and see how well it is stocked, visit the library and see their collections as well as the atmosphere (is this the kind of place you would be able to study in?) If you can, visit a dorm and see what the rooms look like. Many dorms now have security systems so you may not be able to get in without an escort. You may want to stop by and watch a class in session if this is possible.

I do encourage you to think about the things you want in a college and look at those aspects when you visit. There are many different colleges and they are all different! This is an important decision to make so don't make it lightly. Do your homework and check around!
