A different kind of Greek- Business Fraternities

I guess you could say I was Greek. I was in Alpha Kappa Psi, an undergraduate business fraternity at Indiana University. Why did I join a business fraternity, I mean it sounds pretty nerdy!
Here's why I rushed AKPsi:
1- I wanted the comraderie (brother/sisterhood) that comes with Greek life, but I didn't want to go through Rush and I didn't want to live in a house with 75 other girls. Hell, it was bad enough living in a house with 4 other girls, but that's another story altogether.
2- I was a very involved little chickie in high school and I wanted something to join where I could be a leader, and use the cheesy side of me.
3- It looked like something that would help me out professionally, in terms of preparing my resume and learning interview tips. Plus, it would look good on my resume.
4- It also looked pretty social, and I wanted friends within the business school.

It well exceeded my expectations. Here's why it was great for me:
1- I got the brotherhood that I was looking for. (Once I got over the fact that I was a girl in a fraternity, and I was called a 'brother') I was in a chapter of 100+ people, and we truly were close. I pledged with a group of 40 or so, and we bonded the same way that fraternity/ sorority pledge classes do. We weren't hazed in the ways you hear about in those houses, but the semester of pledging bonded us just the same.
2- Finally, a place for my "wanting-to-belong-to-something" side to thrive! I was a little bit obsessive compulsive in high school with my youth group- it was a very big part of my life. But I learned there that I want to be a leader in groups and to make things happen. In AKPsi, I was able to be an officer and head committees. I even invented the Spirit Committee for Senior Appreciation (see how I am cheesy).
3- Did it ever help me out professionally! In addition to being interviewed by 3 formal panels to get in, I sat on those panels many times as an active member. Being the interviewer gives you invaluable help in how to interview better in 'real life'. I was able to see what it was that the recruiter wants to hear, and what a bad answer is. I also saw many people who blew me away with interviewing skills and was able to learn from them. There are few opportunities in life where you get to be part of a formal interview 10 or so times a semester!
4- Friends- did I make friends! The business school became a second home to me. Not only did I get advice from others about which classes to take, I got help with assignments, help studying for exams, and moral support to get me through the all-nighters. I wasn't friends with everyone in the group, and like any large dynamic, there were petty squabbles, but I didn't have to live with these people as I would have in the 'real' Greek system, so I could just go home and forget about it.

If the opportunity exists, I would suggest a professional fraternity for any major. They have chemistry fraternities, band fraternities, etc. Check it out, it is a great way to meet people and develop yourself for life!
