I was the envy of all...Feb 06 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Oh how fondly I look back on the days that a care package from home made my entire day! I am now a 25 year old college grad of two schools, but I will always remember how my mom knew exactly how to brighten my days. When I went off to college, I will admit I was homesick. My roommate at the time can verify this. I was 18 years old, trying to be independent, but feeling like I just wanted to be 6 again. All these new and exciting things going on around me! But then again, I went from having my parents take care of me to having to do everything on my own. What made this a million times easier was having my mom and dad send care packages. My parents were not financially able to help me out with college expenses in the typical ways you would think. I paid my own way for college and worked and saved and borrowed. But what my parents DID do was listen to me. Whenever my mom called me, or I called her, she would listen to what I said. Now, granted I talked with my mom almost everyday, and I know this is not the case for everyone, but we are and have always been close. When my mom would ask about things, she would actually be searching for clues. When I told her that we walked all the way to Wal-Mart (none of us had cars at the time) to get an extension cord to set our room up the way we wanted and they were out, she was actually listening to things I needed. I would then tell her that I had no idea how expensive cereal was! Just normal chit-chat...but about two days later, I would receive a care package with an extension cord and a box of my favorite cereal. How cool! The care packages consisted of tons of different things from my parents. They would send shampoo, deodorant, fabric softener, graham crackers, toothpaste, and many other need to haves. My mom always made it a point to send me holiday packages. Of course I was always at home for the main holidays, but it was very cool to get Valentine and St. Patrick care packages. She would hunt around for cute little decorative things for each holiday. My dad on the other hand, played a little game with me. Every time I went home, he would find a way to hide a roll of quarters in my things that I wouldn't find until I was unpacking things at home. Laundry was one of my most hated things, especially since I had to pay for it. My dad not only gave me the money, but he made sure it was in quarters! To this very day, I still find a roll of quarters in my bags when I come back from visiting them (I live in an apartment building). Overall, my highest recommendation to parents of college students is to send care packages and send them often! Your son/daughter will be the envy of the entire dorm floor when he/she gets them! Send things that your son/daughter wants and needs. Send their favorite snack items, send them some of the necessities. When they tell you about a CD they are wanting, go get it for them. Don't just send money. Take the time to actually purchase items they want/need, package them up and go to the post office. Take my word on this, you have no idea how much they will appreciate it. |
