Actually, I am still taking time off and it will be five years that I took off before I go back to school in January 2001. Should a student take time off from school? I do not have the right answer, because everyone's situation is entirely different. Do I wish I had done things differently? Depends on the day. However, the one thing I do know for sure is, I would be a lot happier with my job if I did have a college degree. Sure there are plenty of jobs out there that do not require a college degree. Yes, I do make fairly decent money, more than some students that do have a degree. However, this is not what I want to be doing the rest of my life. If you leave school because you know for a fact what you want to do for the rest of your life and it does not require a degree, good for you. For any other reason, I think you need to weigh the consequences greatly. Now that I am going back to school, I will be paying entirely for my education. So, that means whether it is my savings, grants, scholarships, loans, all expenses will be falling on me. I had it easy the first time, when I really did not worry about how much my tuition cost. Now, I am only looking at state schools, because the tuition for a private university is definitely out of the question. So, before you take some time off, you need to think about many things. If you go back, who will be paying tuition then? Can you support yourself on a job that you get, without a degree. Will you go back to school? Do you have a career plan mapped out? Did I think of these things when I left school? Some, not all, and maybe if I had thought things through more clearly, I would not have left. It is much harder to go back to school, then it ever was to start. Now, you have bills, car payments, insurance premiums, etc. Leaving school and taking some time off is something that should carefully be thought out before it is done. However, it can be done, I am proof of that.
