Applying...Now or Never??Dec 29 '00 Write an essay on this topic. Before even deciding on whether or not to apply early decision, early action, or regular decision, you must know the difference between early decision and early action. Early decision is binding, meaning if you get into that college, you pretty much have to go; otherwise, I think there is a big fine or some sort of consequence. You can still apply to other colleges if you check Early Decision for a school. However, if you are "deferred" from a school you checked ED on, then that means that your application is up for regular admission review, to be decided later. You can still get in! It just means that it will have to go through the entire process when all the regular decision applications are in. Early action is non-binding, so if a candidate feels strongly about the school yet not thrilled about the binding agreement that comes along with early decision. This is an excellent option, so take advantage of it when it comes up! However, many schools do not have this option. Along with making early decision or early action selections, there are short deadlines! Be sure that the school you ED or EA is the place you are seriously considering. For some schools, applying EA or ED gives you a better chance in getting accepted just like if you go in undecided because some colleges may have many applicants with your field of study. Ask your counselor or college advisors about all ED and EA decisions you make! I did not decide to apply early decision for any of the schools I applied to, and I really regret it. When I was filling out the applications for some of the schools, there weren't any schools that I really wanted to get into. However, after more research on the schools, I knew I really wanted to go to Johns Hopkins University, but it was already too late to turn in my application for early decision. =( Now I have to wait until April to find out whether or not I got in! The long wait has gotten me very impatient as my other friends have found out from their ED schools whether or not they got in! The Gist: Do your research on schools! If you really really really want to go to a school, then you should consider early decision and early action! Be cautious with deadlines for all applications as well, and good luck! |
