Here's The Truth

Written: Apr 01 '00
Pros:Great academics
Cons:The overall attitude of every other aspect of the school

I guess if you're reading this, you want to know the truth about Columbia University. Look at all the reviews and weigh them all equally but I can tell you that, as a university paid member of Columbia, I will give you the good AND the bad like no one else.

You can't find a school with a much higher academic reputation and strive for excellence than Columbia. Its name is known around the world and a degree from Columbia will open up many doors for you throughout your life. Professors are constantly being flown around the worlsd to speak because of their published works and reputation for excellence. It is one of those schools that mixes a city feel with a sense of your own geographic community; The Morningside Heights campus can be sealed at any time and a few large fields will give you areas to sunbathe or toss a frisbee around. Freshman students, the only ones required to have a meal plan, will undoubtedly become bored and sickened by the food although the qulaity and selection is better than any school I've ever heard about. The student body is capable and active; clubs and speakers promote themsleves and their activities all over campus and all throughout the semester. There is alwas something to do on campus. Sound perfect? Keep reading.

Remembering my days as a student and employee, I look back on many of Columbia's community with pity and sorrow. The intellectual life and pusuit of knowledge is an admirable one that must be encouraged for our society but it seems as though many lose track of the important things in life. Its true that a professor might occupy his free time wondering what Aristotle would say about Plato's analysis of the Clinton impeachment trial but he might also do it without checking for cars before crossing the street. Some students hang on every word uttered by a certain professor all while forgetting to shower for the past week. The school and its administration itself hide behind objective logic and heartless reason for all of their decisions. They do not help to organize university events (any social events are organized by students selflessly giving up their time, usually to be thwarted by the university) because any social activities would interfere with students acdemic pursuits(??) Students are accepted into the school based, to a huge degree, on whether the application readers like them and judge how their fellow students will like them. The school likes blood from their students without offering much in return. Housing has recently been set aside for students who commit to huge guarantees of community projects because the school was having problems with some community based groups complaining that the school takes more form the community than it gives. Columbia likes active students because it is the students that keep the univeristy moving eventhough their efforts are neither embraced nor supported by the administration. When you need anything done, the bureaucratic system will make you sick to your stomach as no one can do anything and the ones who can are too lazy to lift a finger to help a lowly student.

You will get much out of Columbia if you decide to go to it. However, keep in mind that you will not like the people their or the community surrounding you. Students walk around with a sense of constant paranoia that someone will acheive more than them or that they wont be number one any longer. People dont feel happy for each other, they tolerate for what others can give to them. You wont have warm feelings of many of the people you meet at CU. Instead, you'll remember them as people who couldnt feel happy for your successors and constantly felt the need to put others down in order to make themsleves feel better.

Go to Columbia and your diploma will do wonders for you. But keep in mind, you might be selling your soul to the devil
