The Reason for Applying EarlyJan 29 '00 Write an essay on this topic. The process of applying for college is so grueling that you never want to think about anything more than you have to. However, the option of early decision throws you a curve ball and makes the process even harder. In this Epinion, I will explain the reason for applying early, and what will help your decision. When you are thinking about applying early, know what the policy is for early decision at that school. Some schools have binding agreements, meaning that if you are excepted, you must go to that school unless you cannot afford it. Other schools offer agreements that are non-binding, however, you are only allowed to apply early to that school. Non-binding agreements make your life easier because you are not stuck in one school. So, you are asking, "What is the reason for applying early?" The Reason is this: You want to go to that school and that school only because you love anything and everything about it. And I mean everything. You have to like the city, the atmosphere, the programs. In other words you must be sure because you have to go. What then are some questions and information that may help you make this decision? First, you should visit that school, especially if it has a binding agreement. You will want to talk to students, see the dorms, try the food, etc. You will also want to make sure that the school offers a large range of majors just in case you decide you want to change majors in your senior year or in college. Visit places in the city and make sure you can live in that place for four years. All in all, be 200% sure you will like that place. Double check everything, you will not be able to compare one school to another. There is one advantage for applying early and that is the applicant pool is smaller. Therefore, it should be a little easier to be accepted. If you are the type of student who can get into any school you want, then you may not want to apply early just in case you change your mind. If however, you cannot get into any school you may want to apply early to the one that you really like. Harvard is a pretty good example because there are many students who apply there because they believe that there is an advantage of a smaller applicant pool. One thing to keep in mind though is that more and more people are applying early and that means it is harder to get in early. There are some of the questions you should ask when you visit the college. I hope I have been able to answer the question about early decision. There is really no equation that will tell you what to do. If you really feel strong about a college, go for it though. |
