Find your Perfect MatchMar 02 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Looking for a part-time job in college can be broken down into several categories that illustrate the different kinds of part time jobs. I have 4 years of experience in work study positions in college. Over the years I had 8 different jobs that ran across the spectrum of each of these categories. First of all, if you are part of the federal work study program, the federal government pays over half of your salary. This makes you extremely attractive to your employer, they can pay you as much as they pay the kids who make Nikes, and get just as much work. So, first of all, realize this, and know that it expands your choices. There are several criteria in part time jobs in college. 1) Pay. As in any job, the pay scale varies from job to job. However, in this case, the pay often varies with how much you are expected to do. For instance, if you have a security guard position and all you have to do is watch 3 people swipe their cards over the course of 5 hours, you will most likely not be paid more than 6 dollars an hour. However, if you are expected to do data entry, or answering a busy phone, or solicit donations over the phone, you should expect to get paid more, in the neighborhood of 9 or 10 dollars an hour. (Keep in mind that this is for Boston, this may be different at other schools, but I think that the principle holds true everywhere) 2) Punctuality/flexibility of time. Some jobs require you to be on time. You may laugh at this, but college is different than high school, and you will often need to oversleep (this doesn't apply to everybody, but to most) or do something with your friends, or cancel your shift. Flexibility of your schedule can be nice, and there are many jobs that can be done at any time. 3) Bending rules. Because of the federal work study program, and because there are often far more students seeking jobs than tasks to be done, the bending of the rules takes place daily with student jobs. This is not only with athletes, although a lot takes place with them. Consider if you think it is wrong to sit in an abandoned building for 2 hours and get paid 20 dollars, or sit by a phone that never rings for 4 hours and get paid 30 dollars. I would urge you to look for these jobs. They are designed for you to be able to study, and while they may seem a bit absurd, they are fulfilling their purpose of giving you money for books while you read those books. So, consider those criteria in looking for a job, and get a good match. Don't go to a job where you have to do a lot of work, AND you don't get paid that much. You really don't have to put up with that. I learned that the hard way, I hope you don't have to. There is plenty of stress in college, it is important that your job not contribute. |
