Fiscal year employment frenzy

When I arrived at Cleveland State University as a commuter student, I was committed to working while attending classes to ensure a measure of independence while living at home. What I got was much more than just money, I ended up with excellent experience and a full time job on campus that provided staff development benefits that allowed me to complete multiple degrees.

Never underestimate the value of the federal work study program! Many students receive this as part of their over all financial aid package, and a surprising number of them don't use this award for one reason or another. The lure of a better hourly wage elsewhere could result in a decrease in your financial benefits for the next year due to lack of use, so BEWARE!

There are LOTS of jobs available on campus, and the BEST time to be hired is right after the beginning of the fiscal year when the new money is in the budget and most departments are scrambling to hire student workers, and job listings are posted on bulletin boards across campus. Since many of the regular students will take the summer semester off to work elsewhere, it is an excellent time to get a jump start on working and establishing yourself at a job on campus.

Most work study positions are fairly easy jobs, like checking ID's at the gym and shelving books in the library, and most staff members are understanding and flexible with scheduling and finals week commitments. Some even allow studying while on the job depending on the circumstances, so be sure to ask! Be VERY careful to find a job that fits your personality or career choice. For instance, there are plenty of non public service and technical jobs available if you are not a people oriented person, or if you like outdoor work, there are jobs working on the grounds.

Whatever work study job you take will count as work experience and will definitely earn you favor with future employers. I can't tell you the number of times I have had reference calls from employers about a former student. It provides a proven track record of attendance, integrity, and constantly impresses future employers with the initiative and management skills it took to work while attending college.
