I have been a student at Umass since 1994...I know I know it's a long time, but hey I had 3 of my children in the mean time. I started at Umass as a Biology major and later to changed to a Biology minor-History Major.
Why the change? Because Umass offers so many different classes, especially in History, that I became extremely interested in the history of this countries and many others.
Umass offers a wide variety of courses within each department. I have met so many different interesting, knowledgeable Professors over the course of time I have spent here. Not to mentioned all that I have learned.
Umass is extremely accepting of "non-traditional students" and bends the rules in many cases for "Us". For example I was in my 1st semester of my last year of school when I became pregnant for my twins and because I was
put on bed rest by my doctors's, Umass was very accommodating. They allowed me to leave the semester with no withdraws on my records and I was even able to have the financial aide I used re-instated so that it wasn't just wasted.
There has also been numerous occasions when I had to bring my two oldest children to classes with me, and this is when they were younger. The professors and the students were great about it and it worked out well for me!
The cost of Umass, if you are an in-state resident is very inexpensive. I believe it is around $1800 for the school year. Out of state tuition is not to bad either.
The school is in Amherst Massachusetts and the campus is a little city in itself. It is huge. There are well over 25,000 students at Umass including the off-campus students. The University of Massachusetts is in the 5 college area, meaning that Smith College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College and Amherst collge are all with in a 15 mile radius and you are more than welcome to take classes at any of the other 4 colleges to count toward your graduation, or just to take for the knowledge of the class. This is all included in the tuition! Umass is a very diverse school and is in a very diverse area...the Amherst/Northampton area...well known for it's diversity!
The only drawbacks that I found with this school is that many of my classes were extremely large. It was not uncommon for there to be 300+ students in any given class. In most cases like this you don't get to know your professor very well unless you make it a priority. These large courses do have many TA's (teachers assistant's).
For me and my hectic life, Umass offered all the right opportunities and is very flexible!
