Visiting a school can be very helpfulFeb 1, 2000 Write an essay on this topic.Deciding which colleges to apply to are among the most important decisions that a high school student has to make, possibly in their whole lives. Many factors influence which schools are right for the student: rank, tuition, academic departments, etc. But for the individual student, these mean nothing. These are just reflections of the school as a whole. To predict whether a student is going to thrive is difficult from statistics alone. College is more than just a degree to hang on your wall. Companies might look for those, but the student needs to be in an environment conducive to his or her life. The way to find this out is through campus visits. To actually experience the life of the school can mean infinitely more than a brochure can tell the student. Many schools have a pre-freshman program where an interested student can attend a few classes and stay for a night or two in a dorm. I strongly urge all future undergraduates to try these programs out at the schools they are interested in. In a campus visit a student can see the lifeblood of the school. They can experience classes in the discipline they want to follow, they can try out the food services, they can check out the dorms. Brochures alone cannot convey what a physical experience can. I made a couple of visits, but not enough. I ended up at a school I never visited. I have learned some things I wish I would have known prior to my decision. I did get lucky however, I love my school. A campus visit can mean the difference between four years of misery or four years of fun and learning. Things to look out for on a visit: · How is campus security? · How far off campus are the closest places to hang out? · Is there public transportation? · How clean is the campus? · Check out the University Center/Student Union. Is it busy? · Check out the food services. · What kind of student organization will be available to you? · How do the dorms measure up against others you visited? · Ask other students if they like it. These are just some tips. A campus visit can make or break a school for a student. They can be an informative and vital part of the college decision. |
