How Much is too Much?

For those heading off to college, packing may become one of the largest hassles. How much is too much? Do you really need to pack kitchen utensils (i.e. pots, pans, silverware, etc.)? Being a junior in college I have dealt with this situation and have seen numerous freshman coming year every fall with nearly everything minus the kitchen sink. Nevertheless, I have constructed a few ideas that may help make packing a little easier and your vehicle a little less cramped.
(1) Call your roommate during the summer to find out what he/she will be bringing. You may not need two TVs, two stereos, mini-fridges, and two microwaves in your room. (2) Be aware of the tiny living quarters you will be moving into. Not everything you own will fit. You will be lucky if half of what you own will fit. (3) Bring only what you will NEED!! If you are going to college in Kansas you won't be needing your surf board. Think logically. What will you be needing and actually use while at school. Remember, you don't have that much free time while at college, which may prevent you from utilizing many items that you may think are important. (4) The closets and dressers are not that large. Pack clothing according to weather. Although this may seem obvious I have seen students who forget to pack winter coats, especially when they are attending college in New England. However, you don't really need 5 bathing suits and 15 pairs of shorts in the winter. Swap clothing over breaks. When it starts to get cold, bring home your summer clothing and return with your sweaters and coats. Don't let them all stock pile under and around your bed. (5) Try to be creative with your living space. Although you may bring a great deal of "stuff," creativity may disguise your possessions and open up your room.
It is very difficult to pack for college. I believe that at first you should bring only the essentials or at least a limited amount of items. If you believe you need more items from home, have the good ole parents send a care package with whatever you are lacking. It is better to come with too little and have more shipped than it is to come with too much and have no place to put it all.
