opportunities and downfalls

Distance Learning is quickly spreading throughout many institutions. This allows a person to take a class without physically being present in a classroom. This evolution of education makes it possible for everyone who is constrained from family, work, or other obligations to obtain higher education. Distance Learning has various types of delivery systems such as: internet, correspondence, tv satellite or cable. What I find that people fail to realize is the amount of discipline required to pass the class. Just because you are not required to have one on one instruction inside a class does not decrease the amount of work you are responsible to complete. The thought of knowing that assignments are given a lengthier amount of time for completion causes individuals to slack on their assignments. Schools require teachers and students have a certain amount of contact hours for the class to go forward, therefore, that time not provided because of distant learning is compensated through the coursework given. Students find themselves working harder than carrying a lighter load. I do not think that students who have not been mainstreamed into college life should try to carry a full load (12 hours) of distant learning classes until they first try one class. It is important to remember that the final grade is permanent on their transcript.
Distance Learning is a great opportunity for those who want a better education but are limited due to other responsibilities, but it can never replace the one on one interaction through traditional classes.
