As you or your child begin sifting through the countless college applications that have been arriving in the mail over the past several months, you must consider which applications to keep and which will be added to the trash heap. While flipping through these applications, you should not decide to keep or toss the application because it requires you to write an essay or two. Your college career is not something to toy with simply because you are too lazy to write a one or two page essay.
If you are a parenting viewing this article, make sure that your child is not falling into the pattern of removing possible applications from the pile because they don't see the point in writing an essay. However, essays can greatly affect one's entry into a desired college or university. Essays and/or short answer questions allow the college to separate perspective applicants by their creativity and writing of level. For example, when I was applying for college the Syracuse University application asked "why do you want to go to college?" Being an avid skier , who rather skip classes and head for the slopes, I innocently answered that I wanted to go to college so that I had something to do with my time during the off season. Skiing is an expensive sport and I needed a well paying job that would be able to finance my winter activities. This was not the first nor the last question asked on the Syracuse application. In fact, there were seven questions total ranging from one paragraph to two pages.
Be creative when writing these essays. You want to create something that will gain the attention of the reviewers eye. You must remember that these reviewers are viewing hundreds if not thousands of applications, and undoubtedly they grow bored over time. If you are able to write a witty. interesting essay it may land your application in the accepted pile rather than the denied pile. Though you may not believe that writing an essay is worth your time, you will soon learn that that short essay is nothing compared to the amount of writing that you will required to complete once you begin college. It is better to complete the essay and get into a better college than settle for a lesser college simply because you were too lazy.
