Work Study A.K.A. "Down Time."Feb 24 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Work study is a program that allows students to earn credits while working. Usually this takes place on the campus itself and among one of its many different departments. The cons of work study aren't many, but they do exist. It's work after all. You're required to be some place at a certain time and perform menial labor for someone else at a low cost for no gratification. In other words, it's a job. It's also usually something silly, in the case of my campus, it's working the register at the bookstore, or the pool hall, or supervising the computer lab or filing papers in the library. It's not typically very demanding work, and there are some good strong benefits to it. The first benefit is that it keeps a student busy. A busy student is generally happier and better organized than one that isn't. Anything that occupies time for a student in a brand new world, away from home for the first time, and surrounded by loud and drunk strangers, is bound to have some adjustment challenges. Keeping busy always helps. Secondly, it keeps a student involved. A student who works on the campus is more informed than other students about what is going on around them. They also have the opportunity to meet more people and to talk to other students. Social adjustments in college are hard, and interacting - even if while working, is way to get to know your environment and the people around you. Thirdly, you get paid! Yes, you do in fact get money. Not much, but enough to keep your "Beer fund" up to snuff. Here they pay minimum or slightly higher wages, but that's more than enough spending cash for the average college student. It's an activity! Time spent doing something is time that you're not out getting in trouble, spending money, or sitting on your hind end watching Jerry Springer. Any activity that gets a new student out of the dorms and into the world is a good one. Too many kids sit in their rooms and hide or rot. I think that if more of them got out and did something outside the dorms and the parties, the dropout rate (which is 2 in 3 or so) would drop dramatically. If you're going to school and lack the funds, or even just need something to occupy some time, work study is an excellent option. It teaches the basics of handling a job if you've never had one before, and allows for a more well rounded life for any student. I strongly suggest that students and parents consider the work study program no matter what school you're going to. Even if you don't need the money! |
