BRIGHTEN A COLLEGE KID'S DAY--SEND A CARE PACKAGE!Nov 30 '00 Write an essay on this topic.It's always a good idea to send money to a kid away at college. However, cash has a way of evaporating from a college kid's pockets. In a lot of cases, it's better to send some of the things you know will be useful--along with a few bucks! When my stepbrother went away to school, the rest of our immediate family decided to take turns sending care packages. Each couple of weeks, he would receive a package from one or more of us. Even though he would never admit it, I know that life away from home for the first time can be lonely, even though it is also exciting. By keeping a connection with the family, this loneliness is kept at a minimum. Each package included at least one prepaid phone card for those times when he just wanted to talk to one of us. Each package contained a disposable camera that he could use to take pictures and send them back home (we also included money for postage!) and we sent him pictures of the family as often as possible. One of his friends bought a subscription to his favorite magazine and had it sent to the dorm. Here are some of the other items that we sent him at various times: LOTS OF COINS!--There is no end to the things these can be used for--local calls, laundry, soda and snack machines. FOOD--Food is always welcome. It's best to send items that are easy to prepare such as packaged soups, Ramen noodles, cocoa, microwave popcorn, coffee, candies, chips EXTRA SCHOOL SUPPLIES--They can never have enough pens, paper, etc. BATTERIES--These are for all those electronic items like calculators, clocks, etc. EXTRA UNDERWEAR AND SOCKS--Our mother thought of this one. She wanted to make sure he had plenty of extras in case his laundry didn't get washed for a while! EXTRAS--Eye drops, aspirin, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, soap Sending a lot of smaller packages seemed to work better than a few big packages. He said it was something to look forward to when things got hectic around campus.  |
