College Grant Money Available

Most college students are willing to accept any amount of money (grant money) as they will never have to pay it back or return the "favor:. Grant money is actually an excellent source of income to enable all students to expand their ability to spend the summers studying what they want instead of working a job that does not benefit their educational goals.

I would like to discuss 2 things. First the importance of working while in school and the ease of finding money and grants internally at your own school

Many students start out thinking that all they need to do is study and study all year long and that will deliver them to the unfortunate position of not having any job / work experience which is vital for understanding what kind of job will suit one well after college.

The other concept about grants that I would like to stress is that almost all students that are attending a "well or semi-well" funded school (especially state schools) have a huge amount of grant money available to them. Currently much of the grant money in private colleges is going to the international students because the professors encourage them to find a way to study for the summer and since many of them cannot work without a green card their only option is to find grants.

That is great for them but not so great for the students from the states who can easily find a job that will take them away from their studies.

When searching for grant money internally at your school follow this list of resources:

speak with your advisor
speak with a faculty chair in the dept that you would like to study
speak with the office or student affairs
speak with the deans of the college
email alumni sponsors
speak with the Office of Career Services

When talking with these people make sure to explain your situation in terms of what you are willing to do in return for the grant money. The best opportunity for grant money is for students already enrolled in a college who are willing to present their results to the college community upon completion of the grant.

This final display of knowledge acquired is beneficial to the interested community and to the student to show themselves and their peers/profs what they have learned, studied, and concluded.

Do not cut yourself short. The grant money is their to cover your costs. Grants are a great way to expand your base of knowledge !!

Think about how many hours it would take you to make the money that would be issued in a $2000 summer grant. (at 10 dollars an hour (not including taxes that is 200 hours or 5 weeks of full-time work at a good rate of pay)

Is it better to spend 5 weeks working to make money that will be gone after bills, taxes, expenses, or get a tax-free grant with maybe 20-40 hours of total work - research etc.

Good luck and if you are still stuck the internet contains most of the grant descriptions that are available on your college website !!!
