Good, now that I've gotten your attention, I want to talk to you about how extremely important it is to get your college applications in on time, if not EARLY to the educational institutions of your choice. The first thing you need to know is that applying for college should be looked at beginning in the junior year of high school. Yes, junior, NOT senior. Why? The main reason it is important to start making your choices about what schools you want to apply to early is because most applications for prestigious universities are due in the fall of your senior year. There's not much time between September and November 1 to make the lifelong choices you will need to make regarding colleges. Another reason it is very important not only to look at, but possibly apply to colleges early is because many of the more popular and prestigious universities have a tendency to "wait list" students. If you were to apply at the end of your junior year, chances are more likely that you will have reached the top of the wait list by the time you intentionally desired to begin college. When dealing with college application due dates, I know that in California, the magic date for California State Universities, as well as many public Universities is November 1. By this date, your application (as well as any possible letters of recommendation, writing samples, entrance essays) needs to be in the mailbox on the way to your school of choice. Another piece of advice I give you is to apply for more than one school. Even if that is the ONE school you want to go to, take a look at some others as well. What will you do if you are not accepted by that school? Choosing colleges to apply to and taking the time to fill out the applications legibly and intelligently is something that should be thought about long before they are due. I urge that students and their parents think and prepare far in advance for making such a life changing decision.  |
