Why we HomeschoolJul 08 '00 Write an essay on this topic. When buying a house we spent a great deal of time researching the school systems and finding the best schools in the area we wanted to live. We wound up in an excellent school system and our son attended Kindergarten there. We are very pleased with the school and the teacher. Why then, did we homeschool our son for the first grade and plan to homeschool throughout grade school?? Here are our reasons: 1. We get to choose the curriculum and have control over how fast or slow of a pace we set in learning the material. 2. He gets 100% of the teachers undivided attention when he needs it and doesn't have to compete with 25 other kids for that attention. 3. I, as his mother, have the opportunity to watch him grow and learn and see his excitement when he learns something new. 4. We have the "whole world" as our classroom. We can visit museums, parks etc. and study things hands-on. 5. Our son doesn't have to eat lunch in 20 mins., go to the bathroom at assigned times or "rest quietly" when he would rather be reading a book. (Before you say that the "real" world requires us to do this think about this - When was the last time you wiggled around in a desk because you had to go to the restroom?? I know that as an adult we get up and go unless it isn't physically possible!) Are there negatives?? Yes of course there are! 1. You are with you children 24/7. This sometimes gets old!! (Someday I know I'll be able to go to the restroom alone!) 2. Its a lot of work. 3. Sometimes my son isn't interested in math, reading or whatever. Sometimes I am not interested in housekeeping or cooking, though! :) Homeschooling has been wonderful for our family! My son has loved this year and has learned a lot (based on national tests) Would he have done as well in school? Probably. Would I have been able to spend all the quality time with him that I have?? No. |
