They tried, but they couldn't do it.

It's not for everyone, but sometimes it's the best thing for your child or family.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. My son no longer has difficulty managing HIMSELF. That was only a problem in elementary school. It is difficult for him to be in undisciplined situations. It makes him edgy and he's grumpy when he gets home. Fortunately, only a few of his high school classes were a problem. Now that he's in college, his classmates are more self-disciplined, so that's no longer an issue.

During the 2 years I homeschooled Rob, I was able to teach him better coping skills for dealing with difficult people and situations. Also, during that time, he earned his black belt in karate -- hence the greatly decreased difficulty with self-discipline on his part. I highly recommend martial arts for people with ADHD.

If the schools had been better at maintaining order and controlling Rob's classmates, Homeschooling might not have been necessary.

It's really important to remember that homeschooling isn't the same thing as school at home -- especially when the child has ADHD. You have to be flexible and get as much as possible done on "good" days so you can just bag it and do something totally different on the bad ones.

My son also was diagnosed with ADHD at age 3 and school has always been a struggle for him. He just finished 4th grade in public school and I decided to pull him out and homeschool him from now on instead. We are both excited about the challenge, but I had my doubts about how it would work. Your epinion has given me a lot of hope that I have made the right decision.

Jill

BTW - my son will probably also earn his black belt in a couple of years.

Unschooling is child-directed learning. You form your lessons around the child's interests. Some people interpret this more strictly than others -- almost letting the child decide what to learn. More people I know who are unschoolers plan a program, but base it on the child's interests. Unschoolers generally use few, if any, textbooks and LOTS of hands-on. Check the Family Unschooler's Network at www.unschooling.org also http://www.nathhan.com/ - a site for homeschooling families with special needs kids.

but I hear a lot about unschool. Any suggestion as to it? Any links or toll free numbers to places that you benefitted from would be great. This unschool is how many people on the autism lists teach in their home.

I need to get back in circulation in the lists and learn what those are doing. I cannot seem to manage both epinions and lists.

Yes, it is a challenge. I very nearly enrolled Matthew in school for kindergarten. I taught Rob and Danny both to read, but for some reason I was doubting my ability to do it for Matthew. Between his brothers' comments and time spent comparing the program to Matthew's learning style, I decided to let him learn at home for at least another year.
